Case Summary

In 2006, attorneys representing individuals with visual impairments, hearing impairments, speech impairments, and other disabilities that limit or make difficult the major life activities of seeing, hearing, speaking, reading, and communicating entered into structured negotiations with the University of California, San Francsico (UCSF). The parties reached a settlement agreement on November 2, 2006.

Under the terms of the settlement, the UCSF Medical Center agreed to make health care more accessible for people with disabilities. UCSF also agreed to look at its policies, services and buildings and improve access for persons with disabilities. UCSF also agreed to make the bathrooms in hospital rooms wheelchair accessible. UCSF will also make sure there is medical equipment that disabled people can use. They will make sure that blind and deaf patients and visitors are given information in a way they can understand.
