Case Summary

On July 8th, 2004, several firefighters employed by the City of New Haven filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut under 28 U.S.C. § 1983 against the mayor and other governmental workers. On July 8th, 2004, several firefighters employed by the City of New Haven filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut under 28 U.S.C. § 1983 against the mayor and other governmental workers. The plaintiffs, represented by private counsel, asked the court for compensatory damages, punitive damages, and attorney's fees, claiming that they were unfairly discriminated against because of their race and political affiliations.

Specifically the plaintiffs alleged that, while employed as firefighters for the City of New Haven, the defendants conspired to promote employees of other minority races over the plaintiffs.

On September 29, 2006, the Court (Judge Janet Bond Arterton) granted summary judgment in favor of the defendants. 554 F.Supp.2d 142. On February 15, 2008, the Second Circuit United States Court of Appeals affirmed the judgment. That order was reversed and remanded by the Supreme Court of the United States on June 29, 2009.

On August 1, 2011 the Court entered judgment in favor of plaintiff.
