Case Summary

In May of 1993, the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice notified Lee County, Mississippi that it intended to investigate conditions in the county jail. In October of 1993, following the investigation, the DOJ notified the President of the Lee County Board of Supervisors of its findings and made recommendations regarding security and supervision; crowding; improper use of the ""lunacy"" cell; exercise; medical and mental healthcare, medication, and suicide prevention; sanitation and personal hygiene supplies; fire safety; food services; and access to legal materials. It appears that the Attorney General did not file suit against the jail, so there was never a court proceeding.
