On August 15, 2002, the EEOC, on behalf of a female employee, filed a complaint in the United States District Court for the Central District of California alleging the defendant West Covina Motors, Inc. violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The complaint asserted that the charging party was subjected to sexual harassment and retaliation.
On April 24, 2003, the court (Judge Wilson) approved a consent decree terminating the case. The decree included $75,000 in damages and enjoined the defendant against further harassment. Provisions in the decree included a new set of policies and a revamped training program for employees regarding harassment in addition to the requirement that posters with pertinent information be placed in the workplace. The decree would remain in effect until July 15, 2005, for a total of 27 months.
