The Senate has confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for a seat on the United States Supreme Court, effective this summer. Judge Jackson served as a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia from 2013 until 2021, when she was elevated to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. During her time on the bench, Judge Jackson has heard a number of important civil rights cases described in the Clearinghouse: these are listed below.  To highlight two from her District Court career:

  • In Make the Road New York v. Wolf, Judge Jackson granted the plaintiff’s motion for preliminary injunction and enjoined enforcement of the Trump Administration's policy change expanding the category of undocumented immigrants subject to "expedited removal." The new policy allowed low-level immigration officials to summarily deport individuals without federal court review. Judge Jackson's decision was overruled by the D.C. Circuit on appeal.
  • In Pierce v. District of Columbia, a deaf individual incarcerated at the D.C. Correctional Treatment Facility filed suit alleging that officials denied him adequate accommodations. Judge Jackson granted the plaintiff's motion for partial summary judgment as to claims that he was denied access to interpreters and effective communication technology as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Clearinghouse includes these and quite a few others:
