Case Summary

[This summary is temporary while we research the case further.] This case was a class action lawsuit that sought reparations from the U.S. government for Japanese Latin Americans (JLAs) who had been interned by the federal government during World War II. The plaintiffs had been excluded from the Civil Rights Act of 1988, which offered reparations to former internees. Plaintiffs filed on August 26, 1996. On January 25, 1999, a settlement agreement was approved, wherein JLA internees who were alive at the time of the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1998 received a one-time $5,000 payment and an individual presidential apology letter.
