In December 2020, several individuals brought a putative class action against Wayne County on behalf of female detainees and/or inmates in the Wayne County Jail. The plaintiffs alleged that they were subject to a sexually hostile environment, sexual abuse and harassment, and racial discrimination in violation of state law.
In 2025, the Michigan Supreme Court held that Prison Litigation Reform Act does not require judges to dismiss actions that don't meet all the procedural requirements, thereby allowing the lawsuit to continue.
