On June 27, 2024, Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters issued to all Oklahoma public-school superintendents a memorandum entitled “Immediate Implementation of Foundational Texts in Curriculum," which ordered all Oklahoma public schools to “incorporate the Bible, which includes the Ten Commandments, as an instructional support into the curriculum across specified grade levels, e.g., grades 5 through 12" ("The Mandate").
In response, a group of public-school parents, their minor children, teachers, and clergy
who face a variety of harms from the Bible Education Mandate, filed this lawsuit in the Supreme Court of the State of Oklahoma. Plaintiffs alleged that the Mandate interfered with the parents’ ability to direct the religious and moral upbringing of their children.
