[This summary is temporary while we research the case]. On September 8, 2025, Attorney General Rob Bonta, on behalf of the people of the state of California, filed this lawsuit against Los Angeles County, its Sheriff's Department, the Sheriff, the Department of Health Services' Correctional Health Services division, and its Director in the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles. The complaint alleged that defendants systematically violated the constitutional and legal rights of incarcerated persons in Los Angeles County jails through inhumane conditions. Specifically, the plaintiff alleged that the jails are overcrowded and under-resourced, forcing inmates to live in filthy cells with broken plumbing, vermin infestations, inadequate food and hygiene supplies, and minimal time outside their cells. The complaint further alleged that defendants operated a grossly inadequate healthcare system. Plaintiff sought injunctive relief requiring defendants to provide adequate medical care, humane living conditions, effective grievance procedures, disability accommodations, and multilingual services.
