Case Summary

[This summary is temporary while we research the case]. On February 26, 2026, two transgender plaintiffs, both residents of Lawrence, Kansas, filed a lawsuit in Douglas County District Court challenging Kansas Senate Bill 244 ("SB 244"), which targets transgender Kansans by restricting them from obtaining driver's licenses reflecting their gender identity and banning them from accessing restrooms or other single-sex spaces in public places including libraries, courthouses, state parks, hospitals, and interstate rest stops. The plaintiffs brought six constitutional claims against various Kansas state officials and agencies, alleging violations of due process, personal autonomy, informational privacy, equal protection, free expression, and legislative procedural requirements. They sought declaratory and injunctive relief to prevent enforcement of the Act.
