Case Summary

[This summary is temporary while we research the case]. This DOJ investigation looked into alleged citizen status discrimination at Washington University.

On April 14, 2022, the Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Immigrant and Employee Rights Section ("IER") accepted as complete a charge against Washington University alleging citizenship status discrimination. Allegedly, Respondent repeatedly confronted an employee about his immigration status, work authorization documentation, and right to work, even after Respondent acknowledged that the employee had filled out proper documentation.

On April 16, 2024, the parties reached a settlement. Respondent did not admit to discriminating against the employee, but it agreed to the following:

  1. pay 4,465.00$ in civil penalties,
  2. not discriminate on the basis of citizenship status or national origin, and
  3. provide its employment policies to IER for review.
