The original correctional system in South Carolina was established in 1866 when the South Carolina Legislature passed an Act creating the first State-level prison for felons housed in county facilities. In 1960, the South Carolina Governor decided to end the abuses of the correctional system, creating a new State Agency. That Agency was named the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC). Today,
SCDC is a Cabinet Agency, reporting directly to the Governor. The Agency currently has approximately 4,900 employees, just over 19,000 inmates, and 21 institutions operating in various counties around the
state.
