Stanford-MIT Healthy Elections Project

Plaintiff Alliance for Retired Americans is suing Defendants Maine Secretary of State and Attorney General, claiming that 6 provisions related to absentee voting are unconstitutional and deny people’s fundamental rights. Plaintiff seeks a preliminary and permanent injunction to prevent the 6 challenged provisions from being enforced for the November general election. The 6 provisions include: paper and pen registration, photocopier requirement, postage tax, absentee ballot assistance restrictions, election day receipt deadline, and rejection without notice/signature matching. Plaintiffs allege 6 counts for relief, based on the 1st and 14th Amendments, Maine’s Constitution, and Maine law.
