In 2002, the ACLU of Washington and the ACLU's National Prison Project filed suit over prisoner conditions at the Jefferson County Jail. The lawsuit sought an end to the unconstitutional treatment of inmates, including deficient jail plumbing, hygiene, climate control, medical care, access to courts, access to reading material, and staffing.
