Both Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protect school employees against discrimination based on their religious beliefs. Religious discrimination occurs when employers treat employees or applicants for employment unfavorably because of their religious beliefs or practices. Title VII protects individuals who belong to traditional, organized religions, such as Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam, as well as those who hold sincere religious, ethical, or moral beliefs but are not necessarily followers of an organized religion.
