Several trans women sued the Colorado Department of Corrections in 2019 claiming they were denied basic safety measures and access to appropriate medical care. As part of a $2.1 million class action settlement under review by a Denver judge, Colorado is poised to become the first state in the nation to provide incarcerated transgender women with an intermediary unit, rather than automatically housing them in a men’s or women’s facility.
