The Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office is no longer being supervised by federal officials after officers detained people up to dozens of hours for witnessing crimes. The Department of Justice announced it will stop supervising the EPSO after six years. The federal oversight followed reports that officers used illegal "investigative holds" and violated the constitutional rights of hundreds of people in stops, searches, and arrest practices, EPSO officials announced today.
