Winter’ and Williams' campaign for Mississippi’s 1967 gubernatorial elections. Winter lost to John Bell Williams in the second primary by a count of 371,815 to 310,527. The loss is attributed to Winter’s attempt to run as a racial moderate at a time when the race issue remained alive and well, and the governor’s contest proved the state’s last overtly racist election.
