[This summary is temporary while we research the case.] This is a lawsuit in which the United States filed suit, seeking to compel the university hospital to allow the Department of Health and Human Services access to the medical records of an infant with spina bifida, hydrocephalus, microcephaly, bilateral upper extremity spasticity, a prolapsed rectum, and a malformed brain stem, whose parents had refused to consent to corrective surgical procedures. The case was filed on October 16, 1983, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
