[This summary is temporary while we research the case.] This is a lawsuit in which the Governor of Maryland, the Mayor of Baltimore, and the City Council of Baltimore sued the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare and several of its officers, seeking to enjoin the defendants from continuing to pursue racial desegregation in Maryland institutions of higher education and Baltimore city schools. The case was filed on January 5, 1976, in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.
