On July 1, 2021, a New Jersey Superior Court Judge approved a monetary class action settlement that resolved three different lawsuits against the New Jersey Department of Corrections by women who were incarcerated at the Edna Mahan Correctional facility for Women. The plaintiffs alleged that they had been subjected to sexual and other abuse while incarcerated at the facility.
The facility had been the subject of a U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act (CRIPA) investigation since April 2018. That investigation resulted in a settlement and purposed consent decree on August 10, 2021. More information about that case can be found at United States v. New Jersey (DOJ CRIPA Investigation of Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women).
