On November 13, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division announced it had opened an investigation into whether Michigan's state psychiatric hospitals unnecessarily institutionalized adults with severe mental illnesses. The Division also planned to investigate whether the state failed to provide the necessary mental health services to allow people to transition out of the psychiatric services and remain out. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), people with disabilities have the right to be served in the most integrated setting appropriate.
As of November 2024, the investigation is ongoing.
