Case Summary

(This summary is temporary while we research the case further). On May 9, 2025, School District 49 ("D49") sued the Colorado Attorney General, the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA), the Colorado Civil Rights Division and others in the U.S. District Court of Colorado. The day before, D49 had passed a policy banning student athletes from participating in teams different from the gender they were assigned at birth. The lawsuit challenged CHSAA bylaws and the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act (CADA), which requires schools to allow transgender student athletes to participate on teams that match their gender identity. D49 alleged that CADA and the bylaws were in conflict with the federal Equal Protection Clause.
