Sixteen states and the District of Columbia filed suit against the Department of Housing and Urban Development on March 16, 2026, challenging guidance issued by HUD in September 2025. The plaintiffs, all participants in the Fair Housing Assistance Program through their state civil rights agencies, alleged that HUD's guidance dramatically undermines the federal-state partnership that has existed since 1980⁻.
