[This summary is temporary while we research the case]. Two Tennessee citizens who received transgender health services, filed a putative class action lawsuit against Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) on July 24, 2023, in Davidson County Chancery Court. The plaintiffs alleged that in late 2022 and early 2023, the Tennessee Attorney General demanded medical records from VUMC's Transgender Health Clinic through Civil Investigative Demands (CIDs). VUMC complied by turning over non-anonymized medical records for more than 100 current and former patients without redacting their identities, despite knowing about the state's active targeting of the transgender community. The plaintiffs claimed that VUMC failed to conduct proper review, did not inform patients of the disclosure, and only notified them months later after the CIDs were filed publicly in a federal case. The lawsuit includes seven causes of action and seeks class certification, injunctive relief requiring improved security procedures, damages, and attorneys' fees.
The parties settled in September 2025. This case does not appear to be ongoing.
