In June 2017, Civil Rights Corps filed a federal class action lawsuit challenging the unconstitutional money bail system in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. Our client and named Plaintiff, Edward Little, lives on a farm with his wife and two children in Carencro, Louisiana. He was confined in a Lafayette jail cell because he could not afford $3,000 money bond after his arrest. In Louisiana, the judges who set money bonds, the prosecutors who ask for them, the sheriffs who enforce them, and the public defenders who represent the human beings who suffer from them each take a percentage cut of every money bond paid. Hundreds of other people are currently going through what Edward went through. We hope this case will put a stop to these abuses.
