Case Summary

In 1999, attorneys representing the blind community entered into structured negotiations with Wells Fargo regarding accommodations for blind and visually impaired persons. On November 1, 1999, the parties entered into a settlement agreement.

Under the terms of the agreement, Wells Fargo agreed to install talking ATMs at its locations in California. The bank also agreed to issue banking documents in Braille, large print, and audio formats for blind and visually impaired customers. Wells Fargo was the first bank in the United States to install Talking ATMs throughout an entire state.

On January 14, 2002 the parties entered into a second agreement. Under the terms of this document, Wells Fargo agreed to install talking ATMs in Utah and Iowa. These were the first talking ATMs installed in Iowa and Utah. The bank now has more than 7,000 Talking ATMs in the United States.
