[This summary is temporary while we research the case.] This is a class action lawsuit in which thirteen African-American police officers and applicants sued the City of New Orleans, the New Orleans Civil Service Commission and various public officials, alleging that the defendants had discriminated against them and others on the basis of race and in the process violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the thirteenth and fourteenth amendments to the United States Constitution. The case was filed on March 9, 1973, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
