The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) opened an investigation into the Maryland Department of State Police (MDSP) on July 15, 2022. The investigation assessed whether the MDSP engaged in racially discriminatory hiring and promotion practices that disadvantaged Black applicants and employees. The investigation was opened after Black troopers accused MDSP of racism and discrimination in 2021. 

The investigation was conducted under Title VII o the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex and religion.
