Case Summary

(This summary is temporary while we research the case.) This case involves a challenge to the constitutionality of a Washington state requirement that voters live at their address for at least 30 days before casting their ballot (the "durational residency requirement"). The Washington State Alliance for Retired Americans sued Secretary of State Steve Hobbs over the requirement in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, alleging that the law prohibits otherwise qualified residents from voting because they moved too recently in violation of the Voting Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution's First and Fourteenth Amendments.
