Case Summary

(This summary is temporary while we research the case.)

On December 22, 2025, Plaintiffs - approximately 20,000 immigrant commercial drivers and business owners - brought this lawsuit in Alameda County Superior Court in the state of California against the California Department of Motor Vehicles and Secretary Steve Gordon. The suit arose following the California DMV’s plan to cancel non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) due to expiration-date errors that Plaintiffs alleged were the DMV’s own making. Filing under the state vehicle code and the due process clause of the California State constitution, with further allegations of ultra vires action, Plaintiffs sought class certification, injunctive relief, reinstatement or correction of CDLs, and declaratory relief invalidating the cancellation letters.
