On February 25, 2026, four minor plaintiffs, identified as A.A., B.B., C.C., and D.D., filed a putative class action lawsuit in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, against Rady Children's Health and several related healthcare entities. All plaintiffs had been receiving gender-affirming care at Rady Children's Hospital and carried diagnoses of gender dysphoria. The lawsuit arose after defendants allegedly provided gender-affirming care to approximately 1,900 adolescents throughout Southern California for about 14 years, but then abruptly announced on January 20, 2026, that they would cease providing such care to transgender adolescents and young adults. Defendants reportedly cited "recent federal actions" as the reason for their decision, and public reports indicated that services would end on February 6, 2026. This announcement allegedly left patients scrambling to find essential medical care, prompting the California Attorney General to sue the defendants and obtain a temporary restraining order requiring continued provision of services through March 10, 2026. The plaintiffs brought claims under the Unruh Civil Rights Act and Government Code § 11135 for both sex discrimination and disability discrimination. They sought injunctive relief to prevent the elimination of gender-affirming care and require its continuation at pre-January 20, 2026 levels, along with actual damages including statutory minimum damages of $4,000 per violation, declaratory relief, attorney's fees, and other appropriate remedies.
This case is ongoing.
