Nine women incarcerated at San Francisco's County Jail 2 (CJ2) filed a class action against the City and County of San Francisco, the Sheriff's Office and Sheriff, Chief of Custody, former Jail Health Services director, and Department of Public Health administrator, alleging conditions at the jail violate the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments and Article I of the California Constitution. Plaintiffs filed the suit in the Northern District of California. The case was assigned to Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim.
The complaint discusses the total deprivation of direct sunlight, lack of outdoor space, inadequate exercise space, chronic plumbing and hot water failures, insect infestation, and inadequate nutrition. A separate Equal Protection claim is brought on behalf of a women's subclass, alleging female inmates—who cannot be transferred to County Jail 3 as male inmates can—face categorically worse conditions and fewer opportunities than men.
Plaintiffs seek class certification , injunctive and declaratory relief, and compensatory and punitive damages.
