This case was instituted on January 27, 2003 when a pro se complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in order to challenge certain practices allegedly engaged in by officials at New York Department of Corrections (DOC) facilities. On July 21, 2003, after having secured court-appointed counsel, the three inmate plaintiffs filed an amended 42 U.S.C. § 1983 complaint. Plaintiffs alleged that Department of Corrections employees engaged in staging and betting on illegal fights between inmates. Plaintiffs further alleged that, when they refused to participate in such "arena fighting," corrections officers severely beat them.

Our information on this case is limited to that found in the PACER docket. According to the docket, the parties engaged in discovery and eventually settled the case. The District Court (Judge Ronald L. Ellis) entered a Stipulation and Order of Settlement and Discontinuance on August 25, 2004. The Terms of the settlement are not apparent from the PACER docket.
