Case Summary

On January 15, 2025, the United States Department of Justice filed suit against Fayette County, Tennessee and the Fayette County Board of County Commissioners for allegedly violating §2 of the Voting Rights Act. The case was filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. The Fayette County Board of County Commissioners had previously adopted a redistricting plan that did not create a single majority-minority voting district for Black voters, despite the fact that Black voters constituted a large enough percentage of the population to create such a district. The DOJ alleged that redistricting plan deprived Black voters of an equal opportunity to participate in the political process and to elect their candidates of choice.

The DOJ sought declaratory and injunctive relief. T and assigned to Judge Mark S. Norris and Magistrate Judge Charmiane G. Claxton. As of February 10, 2025, this case is still ongoing.
