On January 22, 2026, the City of Philadelphia filed suit against Doug Burgum, Secretary of the Interior, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the National Parks Service in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. This lawsuit alleges that in March 2025, President Trump issued Executive Order No. 14253, calling for among other things, the Interior Department to “ensure that [materials under the jurisdiction of the department] do not contain descriptions, depictions, or other content that inappropriately disparage Americans past or living (including persons living in colonial times).” The National Parks Service, then, at the direction of President Donald Trump, has begun or will imminently begin removing all references to slavery at the historical site known as the “President’s House” in Philadelphia.
