[This case is temporary while we research the case]. On June 3, 2026, two subscribers and members of the Stars and Stripes, the U.S. military's independent newspaper, filed this complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The plaintiffs sued the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Feinberg, and Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Sean Parnell. The plaintiffs alleged that beginning in January 2026, the defendants took a series of actions to seize unprecedented editorial control over Stars and Stripes ("Stripes"), which has had a history of editorial independence dating to the Civil War. The plaintiffs asserted five counts under the APA and the First Amendment, and sought declaratory relief, vacatur, and permanent injunctions against both the repeal rule and the DoD memorandum.
