On December 23, 2024, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) filed this lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The CFPB sued Rocket Homes Real Estate LLC, JMG Holding Partners LLC, and JMG’s real estate brokerage affiliates for violations of the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA), alleging that the defendants unlawfully gave things of value to real estate brokers and agents for mortgage and escrow referrals. The CFPB sought a permanent injunction, monetary relief, prejudgment interest, redress, disgorgement, and attorney’s fees. The case was assigned to District Judge Brandy R. McMillion.

On February 21, 2025, the defendants filed a motion to dismiss for failure to state a claim and lack of subject matter jurisdiction. They argued that their alleged conduct was protected by RESPA's "safe harbor," which exempted longstanding industry referral practices, and that their referral practices fell within that exemption. They further argued that the court lacked federal question jurisdiction because the CFPB’s current funding was unlawful.

After a change in presidential administration, on February 27, 2025, the CFPB filed a notice of voluntary dismissal. A day later, the court dismissed the case. This case is now closed.
