Case: Hinds v. Multnomah County

Case Summary

On November 8, 2007, the plaintiffs filed a class action complaint against the Multnomah County Sheriff's department and the Multnomah County jail, with the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, pursuant to 42 U.S.C §1983. The complaint challenged the Sheriff's department policy of strip-searching, and placing in jail clothing, all individuals who enter the Multnomah County Jail. The plaintiffs, represented by private counsel, asked the court for declaratory and injunctive relief specifically contending that even those individuals charged with minor crimes or misdemeanors were subject to the strip-search policy without a reasonable suspicion that they were carrying a weapon.

On September 3, 2008 the defendants moved for summary judgment, with the judge setting October 14, 2008 for the hearing of the motion.

As of September 3, 2008 the case is still ongoing and we have no further information on file.
