This case involves a challenge to a Louisiana law banning gender-affirming care for transgender individuals (the “Health Care Ban”) .
On January 1, 2024, the Health Care Ban went into effect. A week later, on January 8, several Louisiana transgender minors and their parents filed suit against the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, its members, and the state attorney general. Plaintiffs filed suit in the Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans, and they sought declaratory and injunctive relief Plaintiffs alleged that a Louisiana law banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors violated the state’s constitutional guarantees of equal protection, medical autonomy, and parental autonomy. Plaintiffs were represented by Lambda Legal as well as Harvard Law School’s Center for Health Law & Policy Innovation and private counsel.
