On March 4, 2014, Planned Parenthood of Arizona, Tucson Women's Center, and a physician filed suit against the Director of the Arizona Department of Health Services in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. Represented by Planned Parenthood Federation o America and the Center for Reproductive Rights, plaintiffs sought to block the enforcement of an Arizona state law whose language would allegedly have prevented doctors from being able to prescribe mifeprex and misoprostol, severely curtailing medication abortion access in the state. Plaintiffs alleged the law violated the 14th Amendment's due process and equal protection clauses, and they sought declaratory and injunctive relief. The case was assigned to Judge Frank R. Zapata.

Shortly after filing this case, plaintiffs also filed a separate case in Arizona state court challenging the law on state law grounds.

On April 1, 2014 Judge Zapata denied the plaintiffs’ request for a temporary restraining order, reasoning that because alternative abortion methods remained open to Arizona women, the law did not impair abortion access. The plaintiffs appealed the denial to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, who granted a preliminary injunction on June 3, 2014. The Court of Appeals found that "the Arizona law substantially burdened women’s access to abortion services, and Arizona introduced no evidence that the law advanced in any way Arizona’s interest in women’s health." The Ninth Circuit also ordered that the law be blocked while the case proceeded. Arizona appealed the Circuit Court's ruling to the Supreme Court, who denied cert on December 15, 2014.

On May 17, 2016, the Governor of Arizona signed a new law effectively repealing the statute being challenged. On September 14, 2016 the plaintiffs stipulated to a dismissal of their case. On December 27, 2016 the court ordered that plaintiffs be awarded attorneys fees.
