On March 20, 2025, the National Federation of the Blind, the National Federation of the Blind of West Virginia, and two blind students filed a lawsuit against West Virginia University in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. Plaintiffs alleged that the University systematically denied blind students equal access to its educational programs, services, and activities in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
