On July 21, 2025, the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, Education Opportunities Section, announced an investigation into George Mason University (GMU) to determine whether the school had discriminated against individuals based on race or national origin, in violation of Title VI §2000d. The notice letter did not provide any additional specificity as to the manner in which GMU might have discriminated in violation of Title VI §2000d, but the DOJ’s press release stated that the investigation would focus on discrimination in the university’s admissions practices, student benefits, and scholarships, as well as its response to antisemitism on campus. Neither the press release nor the notice letter specify the potential victims of the bias being investigated.

In its notice letter, the DOJ stated that it would require GMU to produce certifications, responses to questions, and data based on Requests for Information also issued on July 21, 2025. Those Requests for Information were not made publicly available. In the letter, the DOJ also stated that it had made no conclusions about the subject of the investigation at the time of issuing the letter.

On July 17, 2025, the DOJ announced it had opened an investigation into GMU's hiring and promotion decisions. Also in July of 2025, the Department of Education announced multiple investigations into GMU.

This investigation is ongoing as of July 17, 2026.
