On July 17, 2025, the Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Rights Division, Employment Litigation Section, announced an investigation into George Mason University's (GMU) hiring and promotions decisions to determine whether they discriminated against men and white people.
In its notice letter to GMU, the DOJ referenced emails, internal documents, recorded discussions, and social media posts that demonstrate GMU’s focus on race and sex as motivating factors “in faculty hiring decisions to achieve ‘diversity’ goals.” The hiring decisions referenced were related to renewal, promotion, and the tenure process, as the GMU President had indicated intentions to develop processes to better serve faculty of color and women. Based on these referenced materials, the DOJ authorized a full investigation to determine whether GMU was engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination. The DOJ also stated in its letter that it had not yet reached any conclusion as to the subject matter of the investigation.
On July 21, 2025, the DOJ announced it had opened an investigation into whether GMU discriminated against individuals on the basis of race and national origin. Also in July of 2025, the Department of Education announced multiple investigations into GMU.
This investigation is ongoing as of July 17, 2026.
