This case was filed by two Metropolitan Police Department Officers against Donald Trump in his personal capacity for damages stemming from Trump's actions during the January 6 insurrection. This case is part of a Clearinghouse Special Collection on January 6 (2021) civil cases.

On January 4, 2022, two Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Officers sued Donald Trump in the U.S. District Court for the District of D.C. Plaintiffs sought $75,000 each in compensatory relief from defendant, alleging that he directed assault and battery, aided and abetted assault and battery, and violated multiple D.C. public safety statutes. Officer Kirkland was one of the Capitol Police Officers who defended the capitol during the January 6 insurrection. This case was assigned to U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta.

On March 21, 2022, Trump filed a motion to dismiss, arguing that he had absolute immunity from actions he undertook during his presidency. On March 24, 2022, plaintiffs filed their response, pointing out that Judge Mehta had denied this argument from President Trump in Blassingame v. Trump, N. 21-858 (D.D.C. 2022).

On August 2, 2022, Judge Mehta denied Trump's motion to dismiss, pointing out that he had previously denied Trump's argument in other litigation. President Trump appealed Judge Mehta's denial on August 26, 2022.

On April 17, 2024, this case was consolidated with the other civil cases against Donald Trump for his actions on January 6.

This case is ongoing. Follow the consolidated action on the Clearinghouse here.
