Case Summary
On June 26, 2025 The Department of Justice (DOJ) opened an investigation into the University of California system, including the individual campuses, to determine whether the UC system is engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination in faculty hiring based on race and sex in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The DOJ stated that its investigation is based on information suggesting that the University of California was engaged in employment practices that discriminated against employees, job applicants, and training program participants based on race and sex. The DOJ asserted that the University of California’s “UC 2030 Capacity Plan,” which aims to increase the diversity of both underrepresented minorities and female faculty, was in violation of Title VII. The DOJ has not issued any findings, and the investigation is ongoing.
