Case Summary

On or about May 16, 1997, the complainant filed a charge with the EEOC against New Hanover County, under Title VII, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e, et seq. The complainant alleged that the county retaliated against her by not hiring her a position of a tax clerk, because she has previously file charges against the county with the EEOC and initiated a private lawsuit against the county.

The EEOC was unable to secure a conciliation agreement between the parties, and referred the case to the DOJ.

The DOJ, the complainant and the county eventually entered into a settlement agreement. Under the agreement, none of the parties made admissions. The county paid the plaintiff a monetary award of $16,250. The plaintiff also agreed to sign a release agreement.
