In September 1998, the Chicago Office of the EEOC filed this lawsuit against Deb of Illinois Inc., doing business as Deb Shops Inc., in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois. We do not have a copy of the complaint; therefore, the exact allegations involved are unknown. After some discovery and several conferences, the parties settled the lawsuit through a consent decree. The parties filed a motion for the entry of consent decree which was accepted on January 19, 2001.

The consent decree required the defendants to pay a total of $350,000 split up three ways: (1)To the charging party the defendant is to pay $100,000; (2)To eligible claimants in Exhibit A the defendants are to pay each a sum of $2200; (3)To eligible claimants in Exhibit C the defendants are to pay each a sum of $1000. The defendants are to send a letter to all eligible claimaints in both Exhibits B and C to encourage them to reapply for a position. Defendants are to also holding training to all hiring employees regarding discrimination in hiring, training to all employees regarding discrimination in monitoring for shoplifting. Defendants must also distribute and post a notice of non-discriminatory hiring policies.
