Case Summary

On August 30, 2023, five women filed a class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against Vassar College, alleging violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the New York State Equal Pay Law, and the New York State Human Rights Law. On August 30, 2023, five women filed a class action lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against Vassar College, alleging violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the New York State Equal Pay Law, and the New York State Human Rights Law. All five plaintiffs were current or former full professors at the college, and Plaintiffs filed on behalf of themselves and all other similarly situated women currently or formerly employed by Vassar as full professors between May 14, 2015 through the resolution of this action. Plaintiffs were represented by Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein LLP and Equal Rights Advocates, a nonprofit organization. The case was assigned to Judge Cathy Seibel and Magistrate Judge Victoria Reznik.

Plaintiffs raised five claims: 1) Vassar intentionally discriminated against Plaintiffs and the Class in violation of Title VII; 2) Vassar’s compensation, promotion, and evaluation policies and practices had an adverse impact on Plaintiffs and the Class in violation of Title VII; 3) Vassar failed to pay female and male full professors equal wages for performing substantially similar work in violation of the New York Equal Pay Law; 4) Vassar intentionally discriminated against Plaintiffs and the Class in violation of the New York State Human Rights Law; and 5) Vassar’s use of discriminatory policies and practices had an adverse impact on the Plaintiffs and the Class in violation of the New York State Human Rights Law. Plaintiffs sought all wages, including interest and benefits, due to Plaintiffs and class members in an amount to be determined at trial; all other damages sustained as a result of Vassar’s conduct; exemplary and punitive damages in an amount commensurate with Vassar’s ability to pay and to deter future conduct; declaratory relief; preliminary and permanent injunctive relief enjoining Vassar from violating federal and state laws by paying its female full professors lower wages than it paid their male counterparts for substantially similar work and from employing policies and practices that have a disparate impact on women; reasonable attorneys’ fees and costs; and pre-judgment and post-judgment interest. On December 19, 2023, Plaintiffs filed an amended complaint that retained the same parties and claims, but added additional factual background information.

On October 13, 2023, Vassar College sought permission to file a motion to dismiss.

On December 19, 2023, Plaintiffs filed an amended complaint that retained the same parties and claims, but added additional factual background information. Vassar College sought to dismiss the first amended complaint on January 2, 2024.

Plaintiffs filed a second amended complaint on January 30, 2024. The second amended complaint included additional factual information regarding Plaintiffs’ specific experiences with discriminatory promotion delays, unfair evaluations, and salary negotiation restrictions implemented by the Defendant. Vassar College filed a motion to dismiss the second amended complaint on February 13, 2024.

On September 12, 2024, the court denied Vassar College’s motion to dismiss.

As of April 12, 2026, this case is ongoing.
