Case Summary

In October 1998, the New Orleans District Office of the EEOC brought this lawsuit against Liberty Maritime Corporation alleging discrimination in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. We do not have a copy of the complaint; therefore, the exact allegations involved are unknown. However, it appears from the consent decree that the complaint alleged the defendant refused to hire individuals complaining of having asbestosis. Following extensive discovery, the parties settled the lawsuit in April 2000 through a consent decree.

The two-year decree, containing an agreement not to retaliate, required the defendant to: report on complaints and pay $251,999.92 to be distributed among 17 individuals and pay for attorney's fees and court costs.
